An Incomplete Education: 3,684 Things You Should Have Learned but Probably Didn’t
IAC Founder and Executive Director David Madden first encountered academic competition in high school when he was the captain of the Ridgewood High School quiz bowl team in New Jersey. While that was 25 years ago, a book that David used all the time for his own quiz bowl team is still a great resource for academic competition today: An Incomplete Education by Judy Jones and William Wilson.
This whirlwind tour of cultural literacy is divided into chapters including Art History, Literature, Science, Philosophy, and many others that you can delve into in a non-linear fashion for a few minutes or few hours at a time. It’s written in a wry, sardonic tone (having trouble remembering what sardonic means? reference the book’s Vocabulary chapter) that presumes a certain degree of erudition (but we know you’ve got that!). While some of the chapters (Political Science, in particular) are a bit dated, and some of what it references is oddly specific (the deep dive into the history of photography is well beyond the scope of almost anything you’ll encounter in any IAC tournament), it’s still a great resource for players and family members alike.
America Unmapped
This book was sold at the 2025 Middle and Elementary School National Championships!
Recommendations for International Competitions
