National History Bowl National Championships: Tournament Structure and Progression

The 2025 International Academic Competitions Varsity and Junior Varsity National Championships will take place from April 24-27, 2025 at the Crystal Gateway Marriott in Arlington, Virginia. More information on 2025 Nationals will be posted in the coming months.

Please note that according to the IAC Stay-to-Play Policy, staying at one of the official host hotels is required for all families outside a 100-mile driving radius of the Crystal Gateway Marriott in Arlington. To register an exemption to this policy please fill out our Exemption Form.

Registration, Costs, and Qualification Notes

Note: Please read all information below before registering!

Important Registration Notes

  • Before Registering: Please review the costs, refund policy, and qualification notes listed below carefully before registering!

  • Processing Fee: Note that credit card payments will include a non-refundable 4% credit card processing fee.

  • Registration Deadline: April 18, 2025 for individual events, and April 14 for bowl teams.
    Registration Deadline with late fees: April 11, 2025 for individual events, and April 7 for bowl teams.
    (late fees are an extra $5 per National Championship Exam, $10 per other individual events (including US Geography Championships), and $30 for History Bowl teams of any size)

Qualification Notes – Please read before registering!

    The National History Bowl require prior qualifying at History Bowl and Bee events at the regional level.

  • 2

    The National History Bee requires prior qualifying at either History Bowl and Bee regional events or at National Science/History/Geography Bee regional events.

  • 3

    The National Science Bee is open only to students who have qualified either on the National Qualifying Exam or a National Science Bee regional event.

  • 4

    The US Geography Championships and National Geography Bee are open only to students who have qualified either on the Geography National Qualifying Exam or a National Geography Bee regional event.

  • 5

    The US History Bee and National Political Science Bee are open only to students who have qualified on their respective National Qualifying Exam.

  • 6
    No qualification is required to compete in any of the National Championship Exams or the National Academic Bee.

Official Refund Policy

  • On or Before April 6: 90% of paid fees not including credit card fees.

  • April 7-17: 50% of paid fees not including credit card fees.

  • April 18 and onwards: No refunds.

Max size is 4 players at once; unlimited substitute players

  • Team – $770

  • Duo Teams – $550

  • Solo Team – $330

Bee Event Costs

  • National History Bee – $155

  • National Geography Bee – $135

  • National Science Bee – $135

  • National Political Science Bee – $135

  • National Academic Bee – $135

Other Individual Student Event Costs

  • US Geography Championships – $115

  • National Championship Exams – $25 per exam
